MASKAS is a collaborative project supported by British Council, showcased at Fashion Weekend Skopje. The project explores the interpretation of culture through the lenses of Warm Metal and artist Hugo Winder-Lind, each confronting the other’s cultural heritage by creating works inspired by eachother’s cultural references. This act of cross-cultural interpretation, undertaken with minimal understanding of the other’s traditions, highlights the misunderstandings and biases that often arise between cultures. The result is a playful yet profound reflection on the subtleties of cultural ‘ignorance’.

The exhibition title, MASKAS, combining the English ‘mask’ and Macedonian ‘маска’ into the hybrid plural ‘maskas’ – intentionally presents a linguistic error. This deliberate choice underscores the importance of fully understanding the context of a culture to avoid misinterpretation and misinformation.
